Walk With Beauty ~ Poster 1

Walk With Beauty ~ Poster 2

Leah has written and is currently illustrating a beautiful retelling of a traditional Metis story about Metis values and beliefs which is due to be released in November 2009. Leah will publish this story, The Giving Tree, through the Gabriel Dumont Institute publishing department. She is very happy to share this story with the Metis community since it emphasizes our core values and beliefs such as strength, kindness, courage, tolerance, honesty, respect, love, sharing, caring, balance, patience, and most of all our important connection as Metis people to Mother Earth.

Givers of Life, 2008 by Artist Leah Dorion

Leah would like to share information about her recent art commission for The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada.  This painting was created to celebrate the anniversary of their International Program.   The “Givers of Life” painting symbolizes the power of women to give life to the next generation.  The women of many different cultures all stand under the sacred tree of life holding and nurturing the babies. The midwives and grandmothers are visually represented to acknowledge their important role in bringing forward new life and supporting the mothers.  The roots of the sacred tree provide the women with the strength, grounding, and fortitude to stand strong.  The large sun in the background represents the ‘hope’ and ‘warmth’ that is a foundation for the work that the society undertakes in its work with the world’s women.

This book gives readers an insight into the important role that the Metis people have played in Canada's heritage, as well as their contribution to literature, music and visual arts. Their many achievements are an inspiration to others and will be a source of pride to future generations.
This publication serves as an important educational resource for all students of Metis history and culture and indeed, for anyone interested in the Metis people.

"The most ambitious annotated bibliography on Metis history and culture to date..."
~Saskatchewan Publishers Group~

"[Metis Legacy] gives readers an insight into the important role that the Metis people have played in Canadian's heritage, as well as their contribution to literature, music, and visial arts. Their many achievements are an inspiration to others and will be source of pride to future generations."
