Digging Medicine, 2006
Traditionally in First Nations culture women carried the sacred knowledge of harvesting and preparing plants for the use of the individual, family, community, and nation. Women’s plant knowledge was so fundamental for survival that every woman carried a digging stick and tools to work with plants. Every young woman was mentored and taught these skills to look after herself and her people. Even today digging medicine with a friend or a sister creates a sacred bond between these women who honour our “old ways of being.”
